Text, Voice, or Video: Choosing the Right Channel for Your AI Rep

xRep can greet visitors over text, voice, or a live video avatar. Here's how to think about which channel fits which page.

An AI rep doesn't have to pick one channel. xRep supports text, voice, and a live video avatar in the same widget, and the visitor can move between them mid-conversation. But "you can use all three" isn't the same as "you should use all three everywhere" - each channel earns its place on a different kind of page.

Text: the universal default

Text is the lowest-friction channel there is. It works on every device, doesn't require audio permissions, can be read at a glance, and is what most visitors expect from a website chat widget. If you're only turning on one channel, this is it - it's the safe default for pricing pages, documentation, and general navigation, anywhere a visitor might be scanning quickly rather than settling in.

Voice: hands-free, in the moment

Voice earns its place when a visitor wants to think out loud rather than type - walking through a "how does this work" page, for instance, or on mobile where typing a paragraph is friction most people avoid. It's a natural fit for pages built around a demo or a walkthrough, where the conversation benefits from feeling like a real back-and-forth rather than a typed exchange.

Video: the trust-building channel

A live video avatar is the highest-touch option, and it earns that cost on the pages where trust is the actual bottleneck to conversion - a homepage hero, a pricing page, anywhere a visitor is deciding whether to take you seriously before they've seen anything else. Seeing a face, even an AI one, closes the "is this a real company" gap faster than a block of text does. It's not the right default for every page - it's the right default for the pages where first impressions carry the most weight.

In practice

A reasonable starting point: keep text available everywhere as the baseline, add the video avatar to your highest-intent pages (homepage, pricing), and leave voice on as an option the visitor can reach for rather than something forced on them. The channel is a visitor's choice inside the same conversation, not a decision you have to get right once and live with - if the mix isn't working on a given page, it's a config change, not a rebuild.
