What Is an AI SDR?

A plain-language explainer of what an AI SDR actually does, and how it differs from a chatbot bolted onto your website.

"AI SDR" gets used loosely, so it's worth being precise about what the term actually means before deciding whether one belongs on your site.

The short version

An AI SDR is software that does the job a human Sales Development Rep does for inbound traffic: greet a visitor, answer their questions, qualify whether they're a real prospect, gather the context a closer would need, and get a meeting on the calendar - without a human doing that work manually for every visitor, and without the visitor waiting until business hours.

The "SDR" part matters. This isn't a support bot answering "where's my invoice." It's specifically doing the sales job: qualifying fit, reading buying signals, and moving a real prospect toward a conversation with a human when it's warranted.

How that's different from a chatbot

A scripted chatbot follows a decision tree someone built in advance: click a button, get a canned reply, hit a dead end the moment the conversation goes somewhere the tree didn't anticipate. It's a flowchart wearing a chat bubble.

An AI SDR reasons instead of branching. It's grounded in your actual knowledge base and CRM data rather than a fixed script, so it can answer a question that wasn't anticipated, ask a natural follow-up, and use tools - checking a calendar, enriching a company from an email domain, logging a lead - in the middle of a live conversation instead of routing the visitor through a form.

What it typically does, end to end

  • Greets the visitor the moment they land, over text, voice, or a live video avatar depending on what the site owner has configured
  • Answers questions grounded in the company's real knowledge base, not a generic script
  • Qualifies naturally through conversation rather than a multi-field form
  • Enriches the account from context the visitor already gave (their email domain, for instance) instead of asking them to type it
  • Books a meeting directly onto a real calendar when there's genuine intent
  • Hands off to a human the moment a conversation needs one - a complex question, a hesitant buyer, an explicit request for a person

Why it matters

Most inbound traffic arrives outside a sales team's working hours, or lands while the team is already stretched across other calls. Today, that visitor either fills out a form and waits, or leaves. An AI SDR is the difference between "we'll get back to you" and an actual conversation happening in the moment someone showed up with intent.

That's the whole pitch, minus the hype: not a replacement for your sales team, but coverage for the hours and the volume they can't be present for.
